Compliance and Experience

• Building Regulations Part K (Protection from Falling, Collision and Impact)
Requires glazed surfaces in critical locations to be clearly marked to prevent collisions.

• Approved Document M (Access to and Use of Buildings)
States that glass manifestations must be present at two heights:
o Between 850–1000 mm
o Between 1400–1600 mm

This ensures visibility for both standing adults and wheelchair users.

• Equality Act 2010
Places a legal duty on building owners to make reasonable adjustments for people with disabilities, including those with visual impairments.

• BS 8300 (Design of an accessible and inclusive built environment). Recommends strong visual contrast between manifestations and the background glass.

Regulatory Requirements
To comply with Section N2 of Approved Document N, all glazing in ‘critical locations’ must be marked to ensure visibility for moving individuals. This includes:

• Large areas of transparent glazing in internal or external walls and doors.
According to Sections M1 and M2 of Approved Document M, glass doors must be clearly defined with manifestations at two height levels:
• 850mm to 1000mm
• 1400mm to 1600mm

Both levels must visually contrast with the background seen through the glass.
